Dear Ms. Melton:

I was referred to you by Jack Davis, a recently discovered relative of mine
with whom I understand you have corresponded in the past.

I received an email from Jack a few days ago, suggesting that my
ggggrandaunt Martha Jane McEwen may be his gggrandmother. We later compared
our information and found it to be true. I have since seen some of Jack's
and your postings on the Keown genforum, concerning John Ashley Keown and
Martha Jane McEwen's children, both by their first marriages and by their
second marriage. I understand from your email to Jack on Oct. 2 that John
and Martha had five children together: Andrew, Scott, Wesley, John, and
Tressie. I am writing today to ask if you have any information about
descendants of these five children. I'm not at all sure that you do...in
the same email you mention that you have '... and some descendants,' but if
you do I would certainly like any information you are able and willing to
provide.

In the same email, you mentioned that you would like to have more
information about George Washington Field and his mother. About George,
since learning of him I have found only one small iota of information: that
in 1866 he was a 'laborer' living in New Douglas, according to "A Directory
of Madison County," in James T. Hair's _Gazetteer of Madison County,
Illinois_, 1866. For other information about him, I must of course defer to
Jack. About his recently-identified mother, Martha Jane McEwen was born
April 17, 1821, the third of eight children and the second of six daughters
of John McEwen, who "was of Scotch-Irish descent, and a pioneer of Delmar
township" according to R.C.Brown's 1897 _History of Tioga County_. I have
no knowledge of Martha's birthplace, but I imagine it was Wellsboro, Tioga
Co, PA, as the youngest four children were born there. Among their eight
children, the descendants of only three of them are well documented:
        The second child and eldest daughter, Mary Elizabeth McEwen, married
Erastus Putnam Deane, who, according to the same History of Tioga County,
had a sort of George-Washington-like existence, studying and practicing
surveying and owning a thriving farm. Most of their descendants are still
in New-England or the Mid-Atlantic states or Southwestern Canada, where
some operate a cattle ranch of some 15000 acres. One of their descendants,
Marion Deane Cooper, wrote a book _Descendants of John Dean of Dedham,
Mass. and Related Families_, from which I got most of my information on
this line.
        The third child and second daughter, Martha Jane McEwen, married first
Jack's gggrandfather _____ Field and then your ancestor John Keown (for
which see above and elsewhere).
        The youngest child and daughter, Catherine Theressa McEwen married Charles
Sumner May, who, according to as-yet-unproven family tradition, was related
to the abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner who was beaten senseless on the
Senate floor by a political rival in the 1850s. Most of their descendants
are in the midwest, including me (I used to be anyways); in fact, they
lived for a while in Madison Co, IL, where two of their three children were
born. Another of their descendants, my mother's cousin, did most of the
research on this line.
I hope this answers at least some of the questions you may have about
George Washington Field's mother.

In response to your inquiry for information of the.Madison Co., IL 1850 census on JOHN A. and MARTHA KEOWN. JOHN A. married twice. First to ADALINE RENFRO on March 10, 1838. They had two children, JAMES and HENRY T. Adaline died and John then married MARTHA J. FIELDS on Novemeber 30, 1848.
Martha had been married also once before and had two children from her first marriage, GEORGE W.
and ALBERT N. John and Martha had two children by the 1850 census. 1850 census, PIN OAK TWP., JOHN A 33 IL; MARTHA 29 PA; JAMES 11 IL; FIELDS, GEORGE W. 9 PA; KEOWN, HENRY T. 6 IL; GEORGE W. 3 IL; ALEXANDER 3/12 IL; FIELD, ALBERT N. 2 IL.

Also found on the 1850 census a JAMES and ROBERT GREENING in New Douglas Twp and PEYTON S. and ISAAC GREENING in HAMEL TWP.

Notes for ALBERT FIELD:
A Family letter forwarded to me by Barbara Gordon, mentions Georges brother, Albert. There are no other references to a brother known prior to this writing. Given the time line, any brother would probably be younger than George.  (10/9/1998).

2/6/99  Albert is found in the 1850 Madison Co. Census at the age of 2, along with his brother George, with John and Martha Keown. Martha is Their mother (Matha Jane McEwen).

Letter from Eva Luella Field (my grandmother) to Eva Field (Daughter of Jesse Washington Field) dated Nov. 24, 1964, says "My mother and father came acrossed the Mississippi River in a raft from Pennsylvania. Your grandpa brother Albert was younger about 4 and father fell thru the raft into the Mississippi River, but was soon rescued & they went to Illinios and your grandpa Field's mother married again & had 10 children....". A copy of this letter was given to me by Betty McAnnally on 11/1/98.
