Notes for KING OF ENGLAND WILLIAM I:

NOTES: William of the House of Normandy; The first Norman King; On 28 Sep 1066 William secured the sanction of Pope Alexander II for a Norman invasion of England. By 1070 the Norman conquest of England was complete. William introduced the Continental system of feudalism; by the Oath of Salisbury of 1086 all landlords swore allegiance to William, thus establishing the precedent that a vassal's loyalty to the king overrode his fealty to his immediate lord. During a campaign against King Philip I of France, William fell from a horse and was fatally injured. William was the illegitimate son of Robert I, duke of

Normandy and Arletta, a tanner's daughter. He is sometimes called "William the Bastard".

The Normans

William I

The victory of William I, 'the Conqueror' (1066-1087), Duke of  Normandy, at Hastings and his subsequent coronation in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066 did not give him complete control of England. Remaining resistance was, however, severely crushed and castles built to control the country (including a fortress at Windsor, and the White Tower at the Tower of London). The lands of defeated Saxon nobles were given to William's followers in return for military service by a certain number of knights, so that the tenants' foremost obligation was allegiance to the King. This firmly established the feudal system. In 1086, William commissioned the Doomsday Book, to record land holdings for the assessment of taxes and other dues. William spent long periods in Normandy to maintain his authority there, dealing with rebellions and French invasions. William died in 1087 in Normandy, leaving his duchy to his eldest son, Robert, and England to his next surviving son, William Rufus.

You do have sources listed for the lineage of King Henry I (Griffith Bowen). I guess what I'm wondering is how reliable do you consider those sources to be? It's not everyday that a person finds information that says that he is 28th great grandson to King Henry I and that is what your web page is telling me. I'm not familiar with these sources (National Genealogical Society Quarterly and  Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists). What can you tell me about them?

Thanks again.

Jack D. Davis

Jack,

I can only give general impressions about the reliability of the BOWEN (and FLEMING) lineages since I am relying on published material and have done no personal verification of the sources cited.

1. Descendants of the Illegitimate Sons and Daughters of the Kings of Britain (or Royal Bastards). A reputable organization founded in 1950 "by four fellows of the American Society of Genealogists, to improve scholarship and research on all 'royal lineages,'" and having Dr. Neal Thompson as Herald (genealogist) when the Bowen line was accepted. At that time G. T. Smallwood was Scribe (Sec.-Treas.). Lt. Gen. Nickerson wrote to me in 1989 that "Dr. Thompson is still reluctant to give me a green light on Margaret (Fleming) Bowen, but others do accept my reasoning. So be it. I'm still seeking to satisfy Dr. Thompson's objections." This indicates to me that care is taken in reviewing applications for acceptance by the Society.

2. National Genealogical Society Quarterly, 67:3 (Sep. 1979),m pp. 163-166. The article is by  Herman Nickerson, Jr., C.G. I a footnote he acknowledge the assistance of Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr., William Addams Reitwiesner and Peter Clement Bartrum, among others - all three being noted for their genealogical expertise and publications. Sheppard was a major assistant or editor of every edition of ANCESTRAL ROOTS from the 2nd through the 7th.

Bartrum published two volumes of WELSH GENEALOGIES in the 1970s.

3. ANCESTRAL ROOTS OF CERTAIN AMERICAN COLONISTS, Seventh Edition (1992). Frederick Lewis Weis is credited as author in all editions, being the sole compiler of the 1st edition in 1950. Beginning with the 2nd edition, Walter Sheppard assumed increasing responsibilities, continuing through the 7th edition. David Faris is listed as an assistant on the 7th edition, which ends the publication. ANCESTRAL ROOTS (and MAGNA CARTA SURETIES) is being replaced by a series being edited by David Faris - the first volume was published in 1996 as PLANTAGENET ANCESTRY OF SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY COLONISTS. The BOWEN lineage was in the 1st through 4th editions of ANCESTRAL ROOTS as line 179. In the 5th edition, the line was ended with Francis Bowen and "prob." son of Phillip of Slade and the note "The pedigree of Lt. Griffith Bowen above as registered and as printed in the earlier edition of ANCESTRAL ROOTS has too many doubtful generations to be acceptable earlier than generation 16." Line 179 was re-instated in the 7th edition, with the following (in part): "Note: This line, as originally included in the 1st edition (1950), offered a 17 generation pedigree from Twdur (Tudor) Mawr, Prince (not king) of South Wales, dwn to Griffith Bowen, of Boston, 1638/9.... Due to the absence of dates and the lack of cited contemporary evidence, the pedigree was dropped from later editions. However, in Sept. 1979 Lt. Gen. Herman Nicherson, Jr., USMC Ret., published in NGSQ... a short discussion of the pedigree.... The pedigree has therefore been reinstated in this edition, except that to conform to Gen. Nickerson's work the first seven generations have been changed to carry the pedigree back to the Norman earls of Gloucester instead of to Twdur, Prince of South Wales, as in the first edition. However, in the absence of dates, pedigrees kept by bards consisting of strings of names without biographical data on the majority of the generations are not the most convincing to the experienced genealogist."

4. THE CONNECTICUT NUTMEGGER, 19:2 (Sep. 1986), pp. 335-41, 19:4 (Mar. 1987), pp. 588-96, and 20:1 (Jun. 1987), p. 25 (correction to prior article). Two articles by Herman Nickerson on the ancestry of Margaret (Fleming) Bowen and on the ancestry of Lt. Griffith Bowen. These articles include must more discussion of the lineages than the brief overview that appeared in the NGSQ (above). In addition, these articles return to the lineage to Twdur Mawr of South Wales and include some side lines. and extended comments on source reliability. The CT Society of Genealogists is noted for it's quality publications and programs, and the NUTMEGGER should be available in any library with a moderate to large genealogy collection.

Personally, I'm satisfied with *both* the Bowen and Fleming lines, even though the latter (to my knowledge) has not yet been accepted by the Royal Bastards. Of course, one reason I accept the royal lines through my Bowen-Fleming ancestry is that it is the *only* line I have that has any "official" recognition. Several other supposed royal lines simply do not stand up under scrutiny, and my one other royal line that appears substantive has several weak links in the American lineage.

Hope this is worth the reading - and typing 8^)

Henry I

William's younger brother Henry (reigned 1100-35) succeeded to the throne. He was crowned three days after his brother's death, against the possibility that his eldest brother Robert might claim the English throne. After the decisive battle of Tinchebrai in 1106 in France, Henry completed his conquest of Normandy from Robert, who then (unusually even for that time) spent the last 28 years of his life as his brother's prisoner. An energetic, decisive and occasionally cruel ruler, Henry centralised the administration of England and Normandy in the royal court, using 'viceroys' in Normandy and a group of advisers in England to act on his behalf when he was absent across the Channel. Henry successfully sought to increase royal revenues, as shown by the official records of his exchequer (the Pipe Roll of 1130, the first exchequer account to survive). He established peaceful relations with Scotland, through his marriage to Mathilda of Scotland.

Henry's name 'Beauclerc' denoted his good education (as the youngest son, his parents possibly expected that he would become a bishop); Henry was probably the first Norman king to be fluent in English. In 1120, his legitimate sons William and Richard drowned in the White Ship which sank in the English Channel. This posed a succession problem, as Henry never allowed any of his illegitimate children to expect succession to either England or Normandy. Henry had a legitimate daughter Matilda (widow of Emperor Henry V, subsequently married to the Count of Anjou). However, it was his nephew Stephen (reigned 1135-54), son of William the Conqueror's daughter Adela, who succeeded Henry after his death allegedly caused by eating too many lampreys (fish) in 1135, as the barons mostly opposed the idea of a female ruler.
